REGUENGOS DE MONSARAZ – Portugal

Reguengos de Monsaraz is a Portuguese town located in the district of Évora, in Alentejo. The history of Reguengos is intertwined with that of Monsaraz, since the limits of the municipality were the same until 1838, when the seat of the municipality was Reguengos, a fact that contributed to its development.

The 19th century Matrix Church, in the center of the town, is interesting for the romantic spirit of its construction in neo-Gothic style and for the play of colors derived from the combination of stone and lime.

The granitic and schistose soils and the climate are suitable for the cultivation of vines, the area being known for its wine production, and give the wine particular characteristics of high quality.

Reguengos means "king's land". This area of the region has been inhabited since the 16th century. The economic activity of the town revolves around the vine and it is one of the most important centers of wine production in the Alentejo. The village is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. You will find a Carmin vineyard store in the town center. Some points of interest to mention are its neo-gothic style church and its museum dedicated to the famous José Batista, a famous torreiro. Reguengos is in a way the gateway to the Alqueva lake region. It is more a city of passage to visit the surrounding vineyards or to go to Monsaraz or Mourão.
